'Choreograph' EBSynth Artwork (2021)

Project Type

Visual Artwork

Date

April 2023

Whilst developing the scent for 'Inbetween by Choreograph' I needed to think about what kind of visual imagery and packaging the perfume would have. By chance I discovered an open source AI application called EBSynth which uses an algorithm to infer pixel change in one image based on pixel change in a video input. This effectively means it is possible to make short sequences of rotoscoped animation (see Richard Linklater's film 'Waking Life') without needing to laboriously draw over every frame of a video.

With such a powerful algorithm at my disposal, I asked my painter friend Freya Douglas-Morris to make a small paining in an impressionistic style depicting a watery scene using lots teal and turquoise with orange and yellow dappled light. These are some of the synesthetic visual impressions I got whilst developing the scent for Inbetween.

I then took a scan of Freya's painting and fed it into EBSynth along with a short input video of the surface of small waves on moving water. When I ran the algorithm and sequenced the output generated images, the movement of the water video had been imprinted into the painted still and a new video was created of impressionistic painted water movement. I loved how alive and psychedelic the new video was - the randomness of the waves smearing and changing the painted shapes.

Instead of stopping there, I took a video of my design for the Inbetween bottle and packaging and composited the image of the moving painted water onto the packaging design and used it as a launch video when it came time to release 'Inbetween by Choreograph SONG x SCENT'.
